CAVALRY TACTICS

‘Cavalry tactics against other cavalry (in the 1880s period) two-thirds to three-quarters of the distance of 1200-1500 yards to contact would be covered at a trot; when 500-600 yards from the enemy, speed would be increased to the gallop with the last 50-70 yards being covered at the charge; no change in direction was allowed for the last 300-400 yards. Against infantry, a succession of squadrons 150-200 yards apart would gallop from 700-800 yards away, the first line drawing the enemy fire ad subsequent lines attempting to ride the infantry down. Dismounted cavalry fond carbine fire against a line of skirmishers ineffective at 300 yards but against a close order target, however, could open fire at 800-1000 yards. With the widespread introduction of magazine rifles, cavalry charges against armed enemy units became suicidal.’
