ORGANISATION OF BOER FORCES: ARTILLERY
‘1n 1899 the Staatsartillerie of the
Orange Free State, under Major Albrecht, consisted of five officers and 400
men, including reservists. By 1901 it had lost all its guns and tit was
reformed as mounted infantry. The regular strength of the Transvaal
Staatsartillerie, commanded by Commandant Trichardt, was also about 400 men.
With all reservists called up, its strength was 800 men. The corps comprised
mountain, siege, field and ‘cavalry’ batteries, together with telegraph,
supply, medical and veterinary branches; and a band.
The Transvaal Statsartillerie had, at
the beginning of the Second Anglo-Boer War a battery of four 120mm Krupp
howitzers, six 75mm Creusot QF field guns, eight 75mm Krupp QF high velocity
field guns, five 75mm Vickers-Maxim QF mountain guns and two Maxim-Nordenfelt
guns captured from the Jameson raiders. Butt their most useful armament was to
prove four 150mm ox-drawn Creusot guns (the ‘Long Toms’) and 22 one-pdr automatic
Vickers-Maxim pom-poms of 37mm calibre. The Transvaal Boers had 31 Maxims of
rifle calibre (0.303in and 0.45in).
The Saatsartillerie of the Orange
Free State relied primarily om 14 75mm (black powder) breech-loading Krupp
field guns, supported by five 9pdr Armstrongs and a 6pdr Whitworth gun. It also
possessed a 3pdr Whitworth, muzzle-loading mountain howitzer, a 37mm Vickers-Maxim
QF gun and three Maxims of rifle calibre.'
