NORTH-WEST FRONTIER TRIBES
The hillmen of the North-West Frontier
were often called Pathans (pronounced P’than). This name did not describe a
race or nation, but apparently was derived from the Afghan name for the
language Pashtu (or Pukhtu) and was generally applied to tribes of Afghan
origin resident in mountainous country along the Punjab frontier. The Pathans
were divided into tribes, the tribes into clans, and the clans into sections.
- Afridis. The most powerful and formidable of the
frontier tribes (30,000). The eight Afridi clans (Khel), in order of
military strength were Adam (6,500), Zakha (5,000), Kuki (5,000), Kambar
(5,000), Malikdin, Aka, Sipah and Kamrai (700) Khel.
- Bunerwals. Regarded buy the British as the most honourable
and worthy of the Pathans (8,000).
- Isazais. ‘Black Mountain’ tribe (5,300).
- Mohmands. Made up of nine clans (Khel) including Baizais,
Burham, Dawezais, Halimzais, Tarakzais and Utmanzais Khel (16,000-25,000).
- Orakzais. Made up of seven clans (Khel) including
Bizotis, Chamkannis, Massuzai and Rubia Khel (25,000-30,000).
- Swatis. Abdul Ghafur, the Akhund of Swat advocated
peace with the British (40,000).
- Turis. Assisted
the British in the Second Afghan War (7,000).
- Waziris. The largest of the frontier tribes (56,000) and
regarded as the most lawless and predatory. The principle clans (Khel) were
the Darwesh 29,000), Mahsuds 14,000), Dawaris (6,500) and Bhittanis
(6,500) Khel.
- Yusufzais. One of the largest Pathan tribes (65,000).
